OK, so here’s the truth and I think you guys already know it. There is no secret. You’ve just gotta start. Do you know where you’re going? For some of you, YES! For most of us, NO! But here’s the thing: if you don’t get out there and pick a direction, any direction… one thing will be certain… you’ll never and I mean never get to where you want to be. The other day, I was heading to a meeting. The schedule was tight and I decided to hop in a cab. There I was in a car with tires and an engine being chauffeured to my destination, not going anywhere because we were in a long line of cars and an over-sized bus stuck at a red light. Now, I could take you down several roads on this journey, but it was the gift of what I witnessed from the window of the cab that I want to share. As my frustration was mounting, my gaze fell upon an elderly gentleman who was walking on the sidewalk right next to me. I was in awe because based on the curvature of his back, the resulting 45 degree forward bend and the cane that he was using to support his body in moving forward, he had to be well over 80. I immediately went to this place of feeling sorry for the gentleman who was literally taking half inch steps as he did a slow shuffle forward. And then, as if slapped into consciousness, I had a profound realization. While I was trapped in this cab and feeling sorry for this man who wasn’t quite as “able-bodied” as he might have been in the past, HE GOT TO WHERE HE WAS GOING! His little half-inch steps, supported by his cane got him to his destination and there I was still in the same place with my “able” body sitting in a car.
You’ve Gotta Get Out There and Put One Foot In Front of The Other
At that particular time, that awareness was an incredible gift because it made me realize all of the ways that I keep myself from truly putting myself out there and taking the smallest step. “I’ll wait until I’m ready”. “One more workshop!” “One more degree!” Well guess what, it’s human nature to NEVER feel like we’re ready and waiting on that day could be a lifelong wait. So what can you do instead? Take your perfectly “imperfect” self and move into action. Take the babiest of steps and as I have already shared, they’ll get you to where you want to go. And if by some chance you’ve traveled down some road you don’t like, at least you will have learned never to go down that road again and you’ll find you’re one step closer to heading in the direction of where you want to be! So let’s break this down a bit… waaaay down… What’s the tiniest, most microscopic step you can take TODAY to get you closer to where you want to be? Share it in the comments below. Now, GO DO IT! Love and light,
